Do Manchester United need Sofyan Amrabat ?

Sofyan Amrabat Manchester United

Let us talk about Sofyan Amrabat, the 27-year-old Moroccan midfielder who is being linked to some of Europe's big clubs and whom Manchester United reportedly have keen interest in. Is he the right profile for Erik Ten Hag's side?

Sofyan Amrabat plays for Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A and was influential in his side's run to the UEFA Conference League final, which they lost 2-1 to West Ham United. However, his performances came to the spotlight during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Amrabat was a key player in a history-defying Moroccan side that finished 4th at the World Cup, starting all of their seven games.

Strengths:

The 27-year-old is well-known for his ability to pick precise long passes, and his short passing range is very good too. At the World Cup, he averaged over 85% pass completion rate in total. His passing can be very safe, but they are very effective in evading trouble and keeping the backline away from unnecessary pressure.

Amrabat doesn't tackle too often because of how tidy he is on the ball, however when he does, his strength off the ball is clear to see. Averaging over 2.7 duels per game in 29 Serie A appearances, the 183cm tall midfielder is comfortable in both the defensive and central midfield roles. His height and prowess are major advantages to fit into a frantic English Premier League setting.

Weaknesses:

In Serie A last season, despite making less than 30 appearances for Fiorentina, Amrabat picked up 11 yellow cards and gave away 2 penalties. The aggressive nature of his out-of-possession game is such that he constantly gives away fouls, making it risky to utilize him as a lone 6, especially against transition-dependent teams.

Amrabat does the tidy work in keeping the ball rolling; however, the Moroccan international adds very little going forward, having just 1 assist in all club competitions last season for Fiorentina.

In comparison to other Man United central midfielders, Amrabat stands out in passing, and he'd do more good than harm to Erik Ten Hag's side, considering his style of play holds technical players in high regard.

It's with no surprise that Ten Hag seems keen on reuniting with Amrabat. The Dutch manager has previously worked with him at FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie.

With certain names like Donny Van De Beek, Fred, and Scott McTominay all available for sale at Manchester United this summer, there could be room for more midfield additions after the Red Devils picked up Mason Mount from Chelsea for £60m.
